What Are Blogs?

Anyone that has not heard of blogging by now either lives in a different planet or is in some kind of coma. Blogging is now so popular that bloggers [those who blog] are seen as the most reliable and trusted voices on the internet today.

Definition Of A Blog

In its simplest form, a  blog usually is a web page made up brief, concrete chunks of information known as posts. It is a short for weblog. To blog means to send these pieces of information which you type just as you type on word, and upload them to your server on  the internet. This process is meant to be repeated daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly or in some other predictable frequency. These posts are arranged in such a way that the most recent come first, thereby making them appear in some kind of reverse-chronological order

Initially, some of the best bloggers were trained professional writers, politically inclined individuals who needed a platform for their ideas  and people who wrote for their love of it. Some are adventurers or holiday makers who just wanted an avenue to keep in contact with their friends and family.

Because these people did not have the time to email every member of their family and friends, they decided to blog. Their friends and family could then check out their blog to read their updates on their activities. This way, the family and friends could keep abreast of their whereabouts, their adventures, mishaps, and golden opportunities while they are on the road.

But that was then. These days, blogging is about the most popular thing happening on the internet. It is no longer the preserve of the writers or politicians. In fact, it has been dominated by those seeking to make money, since blogging has become a mini money making machine in the hands of those who know the tricks.

There are now millions of blogs on the internet, with many more being created daily. There are now bloggers of all types from all works of life. However, the difference among bloggers come from their technical skills, topics and their passion.   

The definition of blog will not be complete without mentioning that blogs are free. There are several free blog sites that allow you to set up your blog in minutes. The two best free blogs site are blogger.com and wordpress.org.

They also have tons of free blog templates and make it dead easy for anyone to build a more accessible weblog.

To clarify, the definition of a blog is this - a regularly updated internet based diary of your activities, your views on any given topic, your hobby [ies], your adventure, your expertise at something, or a corporate information update to customers or whatever you are passionate about, provided by free blog sites, and built with free blog templates.

The one very important point to be made about blogs is that they must be regularly updated. This means that you need to post to your blogs at very regular intervals. This is where the professionals are separated from the rest as most people cannot keep up with the task of posting to their blogs regularly
